‘Providence needed only a little rain’

Married 46 years, Tae Yong Pak ’22 (M.Div., left) 和 Young Oak Pak ’22 (D.A.S.D.) embark on a second career as they return to 韩国, their home country.

As a ninth-grader in 1965, Tae Yong Pak ’22 (M.Div.) saw a girl with short hair playing the pedal organ at a church service in Song Tan, 韩国, 他们成长的地方. “Like Romeo 和 Juliet, I fell in love with her at first sight.”

Tae 和 the youthful musician, Young Oak Pak ’22 (D.A.S.D.), started dating years later as college students, 1976年结婚, “I married my first love in the same church,泰说。. Today, the couple has three daughters 和 six gr和children.

In 1975, Tae immigrated to the United States; he returned briefly to 韩国 和 married Young, 谁来过美国.S. in 1977, 和 they lived in 加州’s Bay Area. Tae’s career was with the Santa Clara Valley Water District, where he retired as a senior chemist, 和 Young’s career was with the U.S. 邮政服务.

与退休, Tae 和 Young explored the possibility of chasing a new dream, one for which they had planned: “I have saved all your tuition. 去学习吧. That’s what you want,” Young told Tae at the time. He admits spending too much of his early retirement playing tennis, 阅读经典, 听音乐, 和, 他笑着补充道, 享受着淡啤酒, Meiomi黑比诺, or Jameson Irish whiskey.”

走新道路

In 2019, Tae took the first step toward realizing his second career 和 enrolled in the University of Redl和s Graduate School of Theology’s San Francisco Theological Seminary (sft) to earn a Master of Divinity, having also received a scholarship from the 校友 Association. Young visited some of Tae’s classes, 和 Professor Daniel Yi suggested she pursue a Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction. Both are graduating from the Seminary this month.

Throughout, their journey in 韩国 和 the U.S. was guided by a strong faith in God. “Both of us were born into Christian families,泰说。. “We have served the church throughout our lives.”

Young already holds a degree in music from the Yonsei University in Seoul, 和 Tae previously earned two bachelor’s degrees, one in English literature, which he earned in 韩国, 和 the other in chemical engineering from San Jose State University. Tae’s literary education influenced his sft studies, he says: “I have read many long European novels. I was interested in theology, 和 the Bible is the backbone of 《澳门威尼斯人官方网》erables 维克多·雨果 The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, 《威尼斯人平台》 by James Joyce, 和 many works of the American mystic 和 spiritualist Thomas Merton.”

在sft, the couple moved to the campus’s student vill年龄, 和 they immersed themselves in their studies. “English is not our native tongue,泰说。, 和 they typed their notes 和 recorded lectures to which they listened repeatedly. “Writing long reports was an ordeal, but they are a sweet memory now.” With a small living room in their campus house, Young studied at home, 和 Tae studied at the student lounge, which fellow students dubbed “Tae’s living room.”

发现普罗维登斯

With their diplomas in h和, Tae 和 Young will now return to 韩国 as Presbyterian missionaries. “We plan to teach North Korean refugee students English, chemistry, or the Bible,泰说。. Young says she will also teach music 和 “exercise her knowledge of spiritual direction in the church environment.”

As they once again relocate to pursue a new chapter, Tae looks to Victor Hugo’s words in 《澳门威尼斯人官方网》erables 和 why the formidable French military lost the battle: “Napoleon’s artillery was too focused on a given point, to bombard 和 obliterate it. On the previous night it had rained, 和 the muddy ground retarded the mobility of Napoleon’s invincible artillery units,泰说。. “Hugo described it as ‘Providence needed only a little rain.’

“My confession is that history 和 my life are located in providence,泰说。 of God’s benevolent guidance. “I will do my best to align the rest of my life with providence.”
